Affordable Housing

Housing is affordable when a household spends no more than 30% of its income on housing costs, including utilities (US Department of Housing and Urban Development).  Creating and sustaining current housing that meets this benchmark is difficult for many communities, big and small, to achieve.

Carrboro is dedicated to providing opportGettyImages-947854280unities for safe, decent and affordable housing for all of our constituents, no matter their income level. Through an interdepartmental approach, the utilization of Carrboro’s Affordable Housing Advisory Commission, financial investment through our Affordable Housing Special Revenue Fund, and policies in our Land Use Ordinance, Carrboro is working towards having suitable housing options for all constituents.

We understand that affordable housing is a regional issue best solved through collaboration. We work closely with regional partners like the HOME Consortium, Orange County Affordable Housing Coalition, Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness, the Triangle J Council of Governments, and others, to find affordable housing solutions.

Carrboro is home to many types of affordable housing to rent or own - from apartments and townhomes, older homes tucked into traditional neighborhoods, to new home communities.
